Fire Department uses grant to purchase smoke alarms to alert deaf
Cape Coral fire department used FEMA grant to purchase smoke
alarms for deaf residents and hard of hearing community members to alert them
about the fire.
According to a report by News-Press,
this smoke alarms will be installed in 5,000 homes of the deaf. Cape Coral fire
department services spent $198,000 on Safe Awake alarm systems.
T3 smoke detector activates the alarm
that beeps three times, triggers and pauses a pulsating strobe light. A piece
of plastic placed under the mattress wake the resident by vibrating and alerts
them to the fire.
David Raborn, the Fire Marshal C.
said, if he installs one unit and it saves one person’s life then it was worth every
penny. The more I dug into it, the more I felt this was a portion of our
population that was being overlooked.
If a person can’t hear the alarm,
this system will wake them up. It is helpful for deaf-said Mark McDonald, the
American Sign Language Translator.
The fire department received nine
applications for free installations since Safe Awake alarms announcement.
Raborn said he’s considering expanding the program to the whole county.
