Chicago Fire Capt. Listed in Serious Condition After an Apartment Blaze


A mayday call was issued when the captain became separated from his crew while battling an apartment blaze.

According to officials, on Wednesday in the Bronzeville neighborhood, at a South Side apartment fire, a Chicago fire captain got separated from his company and was overcome by smoke.

It took about three minutes to the rescue team to rescue him out, said Deputy Fire Cmsr. Bill Vogt. 

The captain was taken to Stroger Hospital. According to Vogt., due to inhalation of smoke, he was listed in serious condition.

Crews were called a little before 1:30 p.m. to the 4300 block of South King Drive. As they arrive, an immediate call was made to mayday along with an emergency medical services plan 1, which sends at least five ambulances.

According to Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford, the mayday was canceled shortly before 2 p.m. after the captain was taken to the hospital and the building was searched.

Vogt. said, no one was home when the fire started on the fourth floor. Eight people were displaced.
Officials were investigating the cause.
