Off-duty firefighter helped cop subdue suspect


An off-duty firefighter was passing by when he saw an officer struggling with a mental health patient who grabbed his gun and fired. The firefighter helped diffuse the situation and to take the suspect into custody.

According to the Sacramento Bee report, the Sacramento Police Department Sgt. Vance Chandler said that the suspect was about to be taken to the hospital to be mentally evaluated when he broke free from the police officer.

The suspect grabbed hold of the officer’s gun and fired, causing a nearby school to be placed on lockdown, the officer was struggling with the suspect. 

The incident was witnessed by the firefighter, who helped subdue the suspect.

Sgt. Chandler said we are very fortunate that the officer suffered only minor injury and passerby came and helped out the officer.

The incident is currently under investigation.
