Wilmington (DE) Firefighters strived to Free Trapped Residents

Around 7:15 p.m. Sunday, a fire erupted at 405 W. 23rd St. and quickly overtook both stories, trapping 3 family members upstairs and forcing a teenager to jump through a window to safety. Investigators said there were no working smoke detectors inside the home.

As per the fire department, an 11 month-old, was pronounced dead at A. I. DuPont Hospital for Children. Isaac Williams, a 3-week-old, was taken to the hospital. He was listed in critical but stable condition Monday night.

Fay Hyland, their 59-year-old grandmother, initially was taken to Christiana Hospital with burns to 70 percent of her body. She was later transferred to the Crozer-Chester Medical Center’s Burn Unit in Upland, Pennsylvania, according to the fire department. At night, she was listed in critical condition.
Nah'Shon Hyland, the 17-year-old who jumped, was treated at A.I. DuPont Hospital. The community has already drew together to raise money for the prominent basketball star from St. Georges who was recently named a first-team All-State player. It took more than 40 firefighters and rescue personnel with their Safety Products to put the fire down and rescue the three people trapped inside, according to Wilmington Fire Department Spokesman Lt. Andrew Cavanaugh. The fire was placed under control around 8:30 p.m., but pulled the entire community onto the streets as the house burnt in flames.
