Milwaukee Church caught massive Fire

A massive blaze aroused in a historic church in downtown Milwaukee on Tuesday afternoon, sending flames and billowing black smoke into the air.

Milwaukee firefighters with their Fire & Life Safety Products were called to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church near the corner of West Highland Avenue and North 9th Street about 3:45 p.m. Assistant Milwaukee Fire Chief Brian Smith said that the fire quickly mounted to 2nd and 4th alarms.

Flames were visible through the windows that gave the scene a horrible, stained-glass appearance.

As firefighters arrived on the scene, flames were present shooting from the roof and adjacent spires.

About 4:30 p.m. power to the area was cut.

Police began moving people away from the site, which is across the street from Milwaukee Area Technical College. Some people could not get their cars out of a nearby parking lot. The police closed off West State Street from North 6th to North 11th streets and hence traffic backed up the entire downtown.
