Mother describe rescue from Dorchester Triple-Decker

Handing her son to a Boston firefighter was one of the toughest decisions of her life when fire and smoke were building around her, says a Dorchester mother.

Initially, there were fumes of smoke out of the window that was noticed by three-year-old Alexander Abad who afterward ran to his mother Marilyn Abad.

It was a Boston firefighter Patrick Callahan, a six-year veteran of the force, who made the rescue with the help of safety protective equipment, saying he was trying to assure Abad through it all. “As soon as I was handed the toddler I tried to walk her through it. I said to relax as much as you can because there are more guys coming,” Callahan tells WBZ-TV.
Both mother and her son were rushed to the hospital as smoke inhalation made their condition worse.
