Extreme Heat Takes Toll on Lewisville Firefighters
On a day when temperatures topped out at 109 degrees, Lewisville firefighters spent hours battling a three-alarm blaze and then later another one-alarm fire. The first fire of the day was reported around 10:18 a.m. July 21. Firefighters arrived at the Villas at Waterchase located in the 100 block of North Old Orchard to find smoke coming from the walls.
Less than 10 minutes after the initial call, the fire was bumped to a two-alarm. Less than 10 minutes after that, it went to three alarms.
“We won’t hesitate to increase the alarms on a hot day like that,” said Division Chief Mark Richards. “We start doubling our resources quickly. We want to make sure we have plenty of people to get firefighters in and out of that situation quickly.”
Once fully dressed, in their gear – the pants, jacket, hood, helmet and breathing apparatus, it can add an extra 50 pounds to their bodies. It also increases the heat index 10-20 degrees.
