Firefighters battle forest fire near southern Greek village

A forest fire briefly threatened a village in southern Greece which was a tough challenge for firefighters. Fortunately, the blaze has caused no injuries or damages to buildings so far.

The fire service says more than 80 firefighters with their bunker gear, three water-dropping planes, and three helicopters are trying to extinguish the blaze that started Monday near Dafniotissa, in the Amaliada region of the western Peloponnese.

Most fires are started by carelessness despite widespread allegations of arson. Police arrested a Greek couple suspected of accidentally setting a field on fire on the island of Crete on Monday
